Renaissance Marketers are polymaths who (1) are multi-disciplined, (2) treat marketing as an investment, and (3) balance the art and science of marketing. They are similar to the Renaissance masters of the past, and because of their diverse skills and knowledge-base coupled with the abilities to dive deep into a subject matter, these Renaissance Marketers are the innovators and creators in their field.
Three ways to identify Renaissance Marketers
- Look at their background. Do they have experience in multiple disciplines, functions, industries? Can they tell a clear narrative of why they’ve moved from one discipline, function, or industry to another? Those who exhibit the Renaissance Marketer Mindset can connect various dots like how an education in psychology can help within marketing, or how experience building financial models can help tie marketing activations to revenues, or how learnings from the gaming industry can be applied to the retail.
- Ask them thought-provoking questions. Renaissance Marketers love to ideate and innovate. If you ask them open-ended ambiguous questions like “any thoughts on how we can bring XYZ to market?”, these marketers will jump at the chance to provide insights from multiple angles (e.g. customer need/want, competitive landscape, financial capability, etc.).
- Assess their questions. Renaissance Marketers are naturally curious people, otherwise, they wouldn’t have this desire to become multi-disciplined or think long-term . Thus, they will have specific (and likely challenging) questions for you. Based on their questions, you’ll be able to assess their level of understanding and willingness to learn.
